Configure IRF on HPE Comware Switches

HPE Comware has IRF - Intelligent Resilient Framework. It’s similar to Cisco VSS (Catalyst) or vPC (Nexus) or Dell VLT. One of the main benefits is that switches in an IRF can appear as a single logical device to northbound/southbound network infrastructure.

Assign the switch a member ID and priority and reboot.

The default member ID is 1. A unique ID must be assigned to each mmeber device. This configuration only takes place after a reboot.

Connect physical IRF ports.

IRF supports daisy chain or ring topology. Full mesh is not supported.

Bind physical ports to IRF ports and activate IRF

Subordiante switches will reboot.

Configure MAD

MAD is multiple active detection, it will prevent split brain if the links between members fail. IRF supports LACP MAD, BFD MAD, ARP MAD, and ND MAD. If you’re using LACP between the IRF and another device, I recommend LACP MAD. The below configuration both configures the port channel and LACP MAD.
